LEEDS are reportedly ready to name Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom as their new boss by the end of today.
Thomas Christiansen was axed by the Whites yesterday after failing to win a match since Boxing Day.
But the deal has a release clause and the Elland Road club are ready to meet that and make the appointment within 24 hours.
Leeds were linked with a move for Marco Silva but the former Watford boss does not want to step down into the Championship.
Steve McLaren was the favourite to get the job last night.
McClaren,56, held talks with United chairman Andrea Radrizzani and director of football Victor Orta after watching the Yorkshire side's 4-1 home defeat by Cardiff on Saturday from the directors box.
He has been seeking a return to English football since quitting his role as coaching consultant at Maccabi Tel Aviv in December to "pursue other opportunities."
