Ex-Liverpool player El-Hadji Diouf released without charge by police after being ‘arrested’ for alleged death threat

The controversial former Premier League and Senegal ace, also who played Rangers, Leeds and Bolton is said to have been held cops after allegedly making threats to kidnap and kill

FORMER Premier League star El-Hadji Diouf has reportedly been released from custody without charge after he was 'arrested' for making death threats.

The 37-year-old ex-Senegal forward was said to have been held by cops for 'several hours' in his homeland.

According to audio released by , the old Liverpool player was locked up after threatening the brother of the President of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council over the phone.

He is alleged to have said: "I'm going to kidnap you, my guys are going to beat you up."

The report also claims he made threats to kill another person.

The news comes just 24 hours after the hugely-unpopular African revealed his ambition to become president of Senegal.

Diouf, who was once described as a "sewer rat" by Cardiff boss Neil Warnock, wants to follow in the footsteps of AC Milan legend George Weah, who was appointed the leader of Liberia last month.

He said: "I am looking after myself and my family.

"For many years I used to think about football but I have a new career and it is a political career.

"I have taken the decision to do politics because I have people waiting for me to change things in my country and I'm ready to do that because I want to be the soldier of the youngsters.

"My future is defined. In the next two years I'll be joining politics, because I know from that point I can change a lot in football.

"I have a lot of passion for politics, and I have people in Senegal who are mentoring me. That is the future for me, because a lot of Senegalese people are able to listen to me.

"I took high-level coaching courses, but decided not to continue since I have better plans for things I want to do."

Diouf, who also had a spell at Rangers in Scotland, last played for Sabah FA in 2015.

He was involved in a number of spitting incidents throughout his playing days and was a hated figure amongst opposition supporters.

Diouf also taunted QPR's Jamie Mackie as he lay on the pitch with a broken leg.
