Jay Rodriguez’s future at stake over FA racism charge, says West Brom boss Alan Pardew
ALAN PARDEW believes that Jay Rodriguez’s future in football is at stake after being hit with an FA racism charge.
The West Brom boss revealed his striker is “angry” but the situation will not stop him selecting the player for Monday’s match at Chelsea.
Rodriguez has been accused of racial abuse towards Brighton defender Gaetan Bong during the sides’ meeting at The Hawthorns last month - and that could lead to a five-game ban.
Albion have defended the player — but Pardew claims it is something that could haunt Rodriguez for years.
Pards said: “It’s not just about us losing Jay for five games, it is a bit more serious than that, his future after the game — whether he wants to be a coach or going into business.
“It’s a serious accusation so he wants to defend it. At the moment, Jay is angry but he is OK.
“He is upset about it, he has a good mental capacity to deal with things and, hopefully, he can concentrate on his football and not worry too much — although it is a worry.
“He is adamant to me and has been, he hasn’t changed his tune or his statement or anything.

“Jay’s been consistent from the moment he has stepped off the pitch. I’ve got no problem picking him. It’s a situation which is not ideal for Jay. It’s an accusation he denies and we are supporting him.”
Rodriguez insists he was “in disbelief” over the claims from the Cameroon international.
Pardew admitted he must tread carefully when talking about the subject.
But the Baggies chief has already contacted the PFA about the charge.
He explained: “We’re in a world where everyone has to be so careful when talking about it. I am nervous.
“I spoke to the PFA yesterday morning and tried to speak to Kick It Out.
“We need to make sure for the two guys that we understand the seriousness of the situation.
“It’s a process that needs to be seen through and our comments can affect it. The less we say the better.”
Rodriguez pinched his nose and waved his hand in front of his mouth after they clashed, before Bong told the ref.
The once-capped England player has until Friday to respond to the FA.

If he pleads not guilty, the case would be referred to an independent commission.
Meanwhile, West Brom could have back skipper Jonny Evans, full-back Kieran Gibbs and midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak. James Morrison and Nacer Chadli are still out.
