Duvan Zapata’s stunning solo effort for Sampdoria evoked memories of George Weah’s famous goal for AC Milan in 1996

DUVAN ZAPATA scored a contender for goal of the season at the weekend.

The Sampdoria frontman evoked memories of George Weah as he ran the length of the field, before dinking the ball over Albano Bizzarri in the Udinese goal.

In 1996, Weah scored one of the game's most iconic goals while playing for AC Milan as he collected an overhit Verona corner at the back post and initiated a one-man counter attack.

He went past two defenders on the halfway line with a exquisite pirouette, knocking the ball past another before slotting it past the goalkeeper.

But was it better than Zapata's?

Sampdoria headed clear and Udinese corner and the Colombian picked the ball up around 30 yards from his own goal — dead centre.

He knocked the ball diagonally forward to the left past two players and continues his run all the way onto the corner of the Udinese box.

Zapata looked up to see a team-mate making a run on the other side, and hit a delicate effort which looped in at the far post.

However, he since admitted: “To be honest, I was trying to cross it for Fabio Quagliarella."

Sampdoria won the match 2-1 with defender Matias Silvestre scoring one for both sides.
