THE Championship clash between Brentford and Cardiff has been postponed after falling victim to the icy blast gripping the UK.

Storm Emma has brought heavy snow and icy winds which have left the country battling to cope, just days after the Beast from the East caused major disruption.

The freezing conditions have forced ref Matt Foley to inspect the pitch at Griffin Park and it was decided it would not thaw out in time to stage the game.

Getting the pitch cleared at Griffin Park was not the only issue facing the club, with concerns over the safety of those attending the Championship match also under consideration.

A Brentford statement said: "Officials arrived at Griffin Park at 1pm, where work had been ongoing to try and get the game on this weekend, and made an inspection of the pitch and surrounding area.

"Referee Matt Foley made the final call that conditions would not be playable by 3pm on Saturday afternoon and the game has been rescheduled.

"All tickets purchased for this match will be valid for the rearranged fixture, and refunds will be given for those who cannot attend.

"Full details of the new fixture date will be announced in due course."

The wintry conditions are expected to wreak havoc with the sporting programme across Britain this weekend.

With Met Office alerts in place for large areas, police and authorities have been warning the public not to travel unless necessary.

Premier League clubs are hopeful of staging a full fixture list, with the advantage of under-soil heating installed in all the grounds.

But in the EFL and across Scotland, league officials are bracing themselves for the prospect of at least half the matches being cancelled due to the weather.
