Chelsea ready to join £44million chase for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, according to reports

Belgian star wants £150,000 a week and Spurs' tight wage policy means the Blues could challenge PSG and Man United for him

CHELSEA are reported to be keen on Tottenham central defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian star has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal amid concerns that the club are unwilling to meet his pay demands.

say Alderweireld, 29, does have two years of his present contract to run.

He wants a better deal, Spurs are sticking to their tight budget and the situation is apparently deadlocked.

Alderweireld is thought to want £150,000 a week - that's close to what Liverpool are paying new £75million man Virgil van Dijk - and that's out of reach for Tottenham.

So Chelsea could make their move in the summer as they look to improve their defence with a proven Premier League figure alongside young Andreas Christiansen, 21.

Alderweireld has a £25m buy-out clause in his contract... and a fee of around £44m that won't worry the Blues, either.

It seems Spurs boss Maurico Pochettino accepts that Alderweireld wants to go.

Ex-Tottenham and Middlesbrough ace Mido has definitely let himself go

As always, chairman Daniel Levy will have the final say on Alderweireld’s future.

It could be that Tottenham defence will also suffer from the loss of England man Danny Rose.

The full-back is wanted by Manchester United, who could propose an exchange deal involving out-of-favour Luke Shaw.
