MANCHESTER UNITED are attempting to beat Liverpool and Arsenal to the signature of talented Napoli midfielder Jorginho.
According to Rai Sport the Red Devils sent representatives to meet with the player's agent Joao Santos after Italy's 2-0 loss to Argentina across Manchester.
Jose Mourinho wants to improve his midfield, with Paul Pogba currently struggling to impress and Michael Carrick retiring in the summer, while Marouane Fellaini is set to leave and Ander Herrera's form has dipped due to injury.
The one plus point this season has been from Scott McTominay, who has excelled against Chelsea and Liverpool despite a lack of experience.
The high-scoring Serie A club have put a massive £50million price tag on a player that has been key to their current success.
While Jorginho is not prolific, with just three goals in 30 appearances, he controls the possession in a way that United currently seem unable to do, as was seen during their Champions League exit to Sevilla.
The 26-year-old, who was born in Brazil, has also attracted the attention of Barcelona and Real Madrid but they are unlikely to break the bank for his signature.
It is United's Premier League rivals that will challenge the Manchester giants the most, with Liverpool and Arsenal desperate to bring in the Brazilian born Italian.
POG-BYE Manchester United ‘to sell Paul Pogba and fund £200million spending spree’ with Raphael Varane and Toni Kroos among Jose Mourinho’s main targets
Arsenal have long needed a powerful central midfielder, however the Premier leagues second placed club have far greater spending power and the lure of almost guaranteed Champions League football.
Jurgen Klopp had hoped to use Jorginho as a replacement for the out of contract Emre Can.
However with the talented Naby Keita ariving in the summer a midfielder may not be their top priority.
