Pep Guardiola has managed to bring the best out of the playmaker, who was sold by Mourinho just six months after the Special One arrived for a second stint at Stamford Bridge.

That ended a two-year spell at the club for De Bruyne, during which Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez were all sacked before Mourinho took charge.

Having returned from a season on loan at Werder Bremen, De Bruyne impressed Mourinho enough to be named as a starter in the Blues' opening two games of the 2013-14 Premier League season.

But the £7million signing from Genk made just one more league appearance as a substitute before he was sold  to Wolfsburg in January 2014 for an £11m profit.

When asked to describe his relationship with Mourinho, De Bruyne told the : "I would say distant.

"I'm not somebody who speaks a lot with coaches. I think if the coach wants to speak with you then you just do it.

"He's the boss. You can be good with each other but still there's a distance between a coach and a player.

";I only spoke with him twice. That was [firstly] when I wanted to leave for Dortmund at the beginning of the summer.
