Reds fans bombarded the Citizens' team bus with missiles and bottles as supporters attempted to create a hostile atmosphere for Pep Guardiola's side.

Uefa subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings against Liverpool over the shocking incident, which marred their emphatic 3-0 win over the Premier League leaders.

And due to the layout of the Etihad, City's bus will head to the main entrance while Jurgen Klopp's side will use a tunnel that leads to the dressing rooms.

Chief Inspector Dean Howard, the match commander, said of police presence: "Plans are in place to ensure people can come and enjoy the match action.

"Let’s hope we are talking about the football on Wednesday."

Guardiola was heavily critical of the security measures at Anfield last week, while Klopp launched a scathing attack of the fan violence.

And while fears of a retaliation from City fans on the Liverpool bus have been allayed, there are slight concerns a number of Liverpool fans have managed to acquire tickets located in the home section.

First half goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane have left the Merseyside outfit on the brink of the Champions League semi-finals.

And they will be buoyed by the news that Salah should be fit for the quarter-final second leg after missing the 0-0 draw with rivals Everton at Gooidson Park.

While City could recall to the starting XI after he came on as a second half substitute during the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United.
