More humiliation for Luke Shaw as Utd pick flu victim Ashley Young ahead of him
Shaw's omission shows just how far the young England full-back has fallen down the Old Trafford pecking order
LUKE SHAW failed to make the Manchester derby - even though Ashley Young had been suffering from the 'flu.
understands that Young struggled to shake off his illness in the build-up to United's 3-2 triumph over City on Saturday.
In the end the England full-back declared himself fit to play... and boss Jose Mourinho picked him ahead of Shaw, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian.
For Shaw, in particular, it was another example of how far he has fallen down Mourinho's pecking order.
As it happened, 32-year-old Young was lucky to escape a red card and not give away a penalty after flying in studs-up on Sergio Aguero late in the game.
Young played the full 90 minutes in a controversial match which also saw him involved in another major flashpoint.
In the first half he handled inside the United area at 0-0 when he slipped while trying to head away a David Silva cross.
Afterwards United midfielder Ander Herrera revealed that Young, along with old stager Michael Carrick, was one of the most influential players inside the away dressing room as they addressed a 2-0 half-time deficit.

Herrera said: "Everyone [spoke out]. Of course the oldest guys with the most experience - Ash, Mike was in the dressing room - they have the power in their words but everyone was talking.
