Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp offers his support to legend Steven Gerrard in his managerial career… unless it’s at Everton or Manchester United
The Reds' manager will back the Anfield hero as he looks set to become the new Rangers manager, but says he won't help Gerrard if he joins either of Liverpool's main rivals
LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp said he will support club legend Steven Gerrard as he looks set to begin his managerial career at Rangers.
But the German insists Gerrard, 37, won't be getting any help if he takes over as gaffer at Liverpool's two biggest rivals.
Speaking to the media this morning ahead of Stoke's visit to Anfield tomorrow, Klopp said: "If he thinks he is ready, he is ready.
"I would be happy for him and support him. As long as he isn’t Everton or Manchester United manager, we would help him."
Gerrard spent 26 years at Anfield, joining as a nine-year-old, before ending his playing career at LA Galaxy then joined Liverpool's academy coaching team last January.
But it is believed Rangers have approached Liverpool and are keen to appoint the former England captain as their new manager soon.
A move to Rangers would see him go head-to-head with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who managed Gerrard in his final season at Anfield.
Rodgers left Liverpool in October 2015 to be replaced by Klopp before the Northern Irishman joined the Scottish champions in May 2016.
And Klopp is confident Gerrard will succeed as a manager and promises to give him his full backing.
He added: "I'm not worried because if, and it is a big if, someone like that would happen, Steven was, is and will always be a Liverpool legend so whatever he wants to do we will support him with that.
"Stevie is good. It has been brilliant. I would have loved to work with him as a player.
"When we first met, we had a good chat and it has developed from there. He wanted to learn and do the job, he has done that. He has good players around him so it is a very good start.
"I don’t even know what the situation is at the moment and nobody has told me anything about.
"I can imagine clubs are interested, he has huge experience as a player and now as a manger so I would think about him as well if I owned a club.
