And asked if he will face old rival Jose Mourinho again, the Frenchman, 68, said: “I am in unknown territory.

“He will be at Manchester United next year certainly and I don’t know where I will be.

“Will I take a break? I have worked at a top level for 35 years without any interruption and I think I am the only one who has done that.”

Arsene Wenger gets warm reception from Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Manchester United vs Arsenal clash

But he admitted: “Unfortunately in my job, you remember much better the defeats — and I have some painful memories.”

Wenger made eight changes ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Atletico Madrid, fielding his youngest side in this fixture since August 2011 at an average of 24 years and 67 days.

He added: “We had a very young team and the players are destroyed because they gave everything and were caught in the final minute.

“There were many question marks if we would be strong enough to fight but the quality was good, the spirit was good, many players stood up. It was a negative result and a positive performance.

“My successor will watch this game and hopefully he will come to a positive conclusion because I think they are the future of Arsenal Football Club.”

“My story with Mr Wenger at United is just a couple of years and I hope I play against him again.
“Who knows, we may still have a big match waiting for us.”

Fellaini is now close to signing a new deal at United.

The Belgian, 30, looked set to leave as a free agent this summer but Mourinho said: “A player that grabs the crest after scoring is telling clearly that he wants to stay.

“I want him to stay, the club wants him to stay. I think he will stay, it is nearly there.”
