Rangers legend Ally McCoist says a lot of fans wanted Neil Warnock, NOT Steven Gerrard

The former Scotland striker believes the Cardiff City boss was the first choice to take over at Ibrox and not the Liverpool legend set to take over

ALLY McCoist believes lots of Rangers supporters wanted Neil Warnock to be unveiled as their new manager and not Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard will be confirmed as the new manager today but, , former Rangers striker McCoist said promotion-chasing Cardiff boss Warnock would be the choice for many fans.

Rangers sacked interim boss Graeme Murty on Tuesday following the humiliating 5-0 defeat to rivals Celtic last weekend and the Liverpool U18 manager is in line to take his first managerial role in senior football.

McCoist said: “It’s a big gamble, for Steven and also for Rangers. I think the verdict in Glasgow is quite split to be honest with you.

“A lot of people wanted our old pal at Cardiff to get the job. I’m telling you right now, there were a lot of Rangers supporters who wanted Neil Warnock to get the job."

Warnock's Cardiff will be promoted back to the Premier League after a four-season absence if they beat Reading at home on Sunday or match Fulham's result at Birmingham.

The Yorkshireman, 69, took over at Cardiff in October 2016. It is his 17th spell as a manager but he is yet to manage in Scotland.

McCoist, though, acknowledges Gerrard's appointment is questionable for some but he must get the backing he needs in the transfer window in order to be successful.

“But, whoever gets the job, they must be allowed to bring in better quality players. That’s the main thing.

“We can discuss Gerrard’s appointment, and some people are for it, some people are against it, a lot of people have question marks about it.

“But the fact of the matter is, no matter who is in, they must be allowed to bring in better quality players.”

Gerrard is thought to be bringing former Liverpool team-mate Martin Skrtel into Ibrox too as part of his backroom staff.
