SERGI ROBERTO could miss the rest of Barcelona's season after being banned for four matches following his red card in El Clasico.

The full-back appeared to slap Real Madrid defender Marcelo during the closing moments of the first half on Sunday night.

The offence was spotted by the referee who did not hesitate in giving Roberto a red card.

And now La Liga's disciplinary committee has given the 26-year-old a four-match ban, which will see him miss the rest of the season, unless the club successfully appeal.

Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw by rivals Real Madrid, with Gareth Bale scoring a late equaliser for Zinedine Zidane's side.

It is touch and go whether Roberto will play for Spain in the World Cup though, meaning he can get some rest before the tournament in Russia this summer, if he is picked.

He was left out of the squad for recent friendlies against Argentina and Germany, with Julen Lopetegui preferring to pick Dani Carvajal as his starter and Cesar Azpilicueta ahead of him.

But because Ernesto Valverde's side do not have any more games in the Champions League, which they were knocked out of, or the Copa del Rey, which they won, his club season is over.

Barcelona managed to fight on without their full back and even took the lead in the second half through Lionel Messi.

Then Bale's superb strike from outside the box helped Real to a share of the spoils, but the home side maintained their unbeaten record as they go for an invincible season.
