And Wenger appears deluded by pride right until to the end, claiming his players were "fantastic" as they slipped to a seventh straight Premier League away defeat at Leicester last night.

Wenger is still making history - becoming the first Arsenal boss to complete that unwanted run since 1966.

With 51 goals against this season, they have not shipped that many in the top flight in 34 years.

But speaking in his final press conference, Wenger said: "The players’ attitude was great last night and they were fantastic. I believe there is a special bond in this team and something waiting to come out that is special and that I like that very much.

Wenger has been inundated with offers and is wanted at Everton by investor Farhad Moshiri.

French champions PSG want him to become their new director of football and he has also been linked with a return to former club Monaco to replace Leonardo Jardim.

He says it has now sunk in that his 22-year reign is finally over and that he can now unleash the ";animal" inside.

Wenger added: "I am very passionate and at a very young age I realised that if I want to survive in this job I will control my emotions or I will not survive.

"At 33 I was responsible for a top team in France. I am 68 today and I never stopped.

"You have to control the animal that is inside you and that helps me a lot. I went through some fantastic periods, some more difficult ones and the fact I managed to keep control helped me a lot. When I finish I here I can reconnect.

"You have seen the real Arsene Wenger. One aspect of me is a guy who is desperate to win games and that’s the thing that matters and that’s what’s really a big part of my personality.
