Charlton graduate Samuel spent eight years with the Birmingham-based club and his form earned him an England call-up under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2004.

He did not play for the Three Lions, but later played twice for Trinidad and Tobago after moving to Bolton as Sammy Lee's first signing following the departure of Sam Allardyce as their boss.

Villa's fans will also pay their respects with a minute's applause before a match that is set to be played in front of an emotionally-charged sell-out crowd of over 42,000 at Villa Park.

The club announced: "Aston Villa is deeply saddened to learn of the death of our former defender Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37.

"As a mark of respect, our players will sport black armbands during tonight's Championship Play-Off semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough.

"Samuel enjoyed an eight-year stint at Villa Park between 1999 and 2007, making 200 appearances and scoring three goals in that time."
