SPORTING have condemned thugs who attacked their striker Bas Dost and other players at the club's training ground.

Portuguese media claim that around 50 hooded men stormed the Lisbon club's base and went at staff with batons and makeshift weapons.

There is also a a suggestion that players could pull out of this Sunday's Portuguese Cup final against Aves.

Fans have reacted furiously to Sporting missing out on a Champions League spot on Sunday after a 2-1 defeat to Maritimo.

Dost said: "I have no words, I was not expecting this situation, it was a distressing situation and we are all shocked.

"This is a drama for everyone, I am empty.

Dutch publication AD, who published Dost's statement, say he was beaten and then thrown to the floor by fans.

His agent added: "If Sporting is not able to protect him, we have to find other solutions.

"That does not mean he's going to rescind a contract. First I have to take care of his and his family's safety given the current situation."
