Gimme Moore

West Brom confirm Darren Moore as new manager following pleas from players to sign him up

Senior officials set up a move for Bristol City’s Lee Johnson but there was a lobby within the dressing room for Moore

WEST BROM have confirmed Darren Moore as their new manager following pleas from the players.

Senior Baggies officials had mulled over a move for Bristol City’s Lee Johnson this summer.

But, as SunSport revealed earlier this week, there was a lobby within the dressing room for Moore who were keen to see him stay on.

The interim boss performed admirably after taking over from Alan Pardew but was ultimately unable to prevent relegation.

Several senior players sought out the West Brom hierarchy to tell them that Moore, 44, was popular with them and capable of doing the job full-time.

Some hinted they would also be more likely to stay and help the club bounce back to the Premier League if he got the post.

Moore’s likeable style impressed the team more than Alan Pardew’s manner and that swayed West Brom to back him.

The Baggies still finished bottom of the Premier League in 2017-18 as they returned to the Championship.

However, a string of good results saw Moore's stock rise, including 1-0 wins over Tottenham and Manchester United, as well as a 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

All in all, the Baggies lost just one of their last six games - but by then the damage was done.
