Mario Gotze reveals heartbreak after being left out of Germany’s squad for the World Cup

But Gotze has not made Joachim Low's squad this time around after returning from a serious illness last year.

And the German shared his anguish, tweeting: "Of course I'm sad that I'm not attending the World Cup.

"I will do everything I can to get back to the squad of our national team.

"I wish the boys, the coaches and the team behind the team a good time in Russia and I will keep my fingers crossed for everyone to be world champions."

Last March, Gotze was ruled out for the season with "metabolic disturbances" - later diagnosed as rare disease Myopathy.

Symptoms of Myopathy include muscle weakness and fatigue, and it can delay the resting period needed for an athlete after strenuous exercise.

However, Gotze battled back to make his first-team return that summer - before earning a Germany recall in November.

Yet he has failed to make the cut this time around, as Low's opted to pass on Gotze in favour of the likes of Leroy Sane.
