And Serie A giants Milan are closing in on agreeing a switch, with sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli hailing the giant midfielder.

He said: "Fellaini? He could be an important player. In fact, he is an important player.

"We know that he is not renewing his contract with Manchester United, but it is difficult to say if we have closed it.

"He has important parameters. We will do something in that role, but with maximum discretion.

"We will close a deal first before we announce a player."

Fellaini sat out of the defeat to Chelsea with a thigh strain but should recover in time for the World Cup.

He joined United in 2013 as David Moyes looked to his Everton connections to strengthen his squad.

And while he has not held down a place in the XI, Fellaini has been highly thought of by his bosses - including Mourinho.

Should Manchester United try to keep Marouane Fellaini?

Old Trafford chiefs could yet sanction an improved offer to help the Special One keep their man.

But they will have to move quickly or Milan could tempt the playmaker to join their fight to return to the top of the Italian game.
