Sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli said: "He could be an important player. In fact, he is an important player.

"We know that he is not renewing his contract with Manchester United, but it is difficult to say if we have closed it.

"He has important parameters. We will do something in that role, but with maximum discretion.

"We will close a deal first before we announce a player."

Atletico Madrid are also thought to be interested in snapping up Fellaini, who scored five goals in 22 United appearances this season.

Fellaini warned Jose Mourinho it will cost at least £50million to replace him.

He said: "I went to see the manager last year, and said I wanted a new contract. I then had a second meeting, but I'm not going to ask ten times.
