Everton must offload at least 12 stars this summer with Wayne Rooney and Morgan Schneiderlin set for exit

Goodison Park faithful warned not to expect another summer of big spending from billionaire shareholder Farhad Moshiri

NEW Everton boss Marco Silva will be given money to spend, but the club must sell players first.

The Toffees' billionaire shareholder Farhad Moshiri spent £150million on new recruits last year, but the club will not be repeating that this summer as up to 12 players are set for the chop.

Everton have a 38-man squad that needs to be reduced to a more manageable 25-30 players, plus a wage bill that was a much as £139million for 2017-18 must be cut.

Wayne Rooney’s possible exit to DC United will save around £8million in wages with the future of other big earners like Morgan Schneiderlin uncertain.

Director of football Marcel Brands had a stark warning for the Goodison Park faithful, telling them not to expect a quick-fix to the club’s problems next season.

He said: “I think first of all, we need also to offload players, to raise money (to spend), and also salary wise.”

“Of course money is also important, but it is also for a coach it is not workable to start with 38 players in your squad.”
Yannick Bolasie, Joel Robles, Davy Klaassen, Ashley Williams, Ramiro Funes Mori and Oumar Niasse are fellow first-team names under threat.

Another reason to cut the squad is to allow more youngsters to be promoted to the first-team set-up.

Brands continued: “I think we have to look for a squad Marco can work with and I think there always has to be space for young players to come to the first team.

“We have to be honest when we take the decision with these players, do they have prospects here at Everton? Because yeah, some of the conversations will not be nice, but it has to be honest.

"You have seen in the past that if short term relations with managers (make it) very difficult to achieve success.
