GRANIT XHAKA has signed a new "long-term contract" with Arsenal - and some Gunners fans aren't too happy.

The 25-year-old midfielder is away with Switzerland at the World Cup, but still had time to agree the new deal with the Gunners.

Xhaka featured in all 38 Premier League matches last season.

New Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said on the club's website: "I'm delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us.

"He's an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.

"I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

But the news hasn't exactly been met by universal approval by Gunners fans on social media.

One wrote on Twitter that "he can't pass a ball forward", while Amy Kibler added that she "doesn't rate him at all".

Callum Dent wrote that it was "the worst news", while Joseph Musker said that the Swiss international had "been average since arriving in the Premier League".

Redwan Abdul believes "Arsenal can do better", while Onwuadi Osolu described the breaking news as "unbelievable".

Jordan Cameron went so far as to label the holding midfielder as "an absolute liability".

Granit joined the Gunners from German side Borussia Monchengladbach in May 2016 after helping them to fourth place in the Bundesliga that season.

He has made a total of 94 appearances for Arsenal, and tasted glory in his first season by helping the team win the FA Cup.

He is now hoping Switzerland can spring a shock or two at the World Cup in Russia. He has bagged 61 caps for his country.

Arsenal add that "the contract renewal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes".
