WAYNE ROONEY is mobbed by DC United fans as he touches down in the US to start the next phase of his career.

The ex-Manchester United captain landed in Washington Dulles Airport on Thursday ready to put pen-to-paper on a three-and-a-half year deal with the MLS side.

The 32-year-old was granted a visa and work permit to play in America, with England's all-time top scorer expected to link up with his new team-mates at training next week.

And wife Coleen could join the former Manchester United striker in Washington for the next three and a half years.

Coleen is said to be "really keen" to move across the pond.

Rooney rejected a move to China to rejoin Everton in 2017 and pals of mum-of-four Coleen say she would not have been as keen on a move to Asia.

The striker will have to wait to make his debut, as the transfer window Stateside does not open until July 10, meaning he cannot be officially registered as DC United's new star until then.

He will miss fixtures against New England Revolution and LA Galaxy, the latter of which have former team-mates Ashley Cole and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their midst.

Rooney will instead be expected to make his debut for the capital club against Vancouver Whitecaps.

The move ends months of talk and speculation of his move to the States.

Rooney left Manchester United as their all-time top scorer 12 months ago, but an uninspiring return to his boyhood club has seen him move to America for a new challenge.
