MANCHESTER CITY star Aymeric Laporte is planning to switch international allegiance from France to Spain, according to reports.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo has revealed the former Athletic Bilbao centre-back, 24, has grown weary of Didier Deschamps' French regime.

The City star made Deschamps' squad for games against Bulgaria and Holland but is still yet to feature on the pitch.

Laporte also missed out on the summer's World Cup and despite playing 19 times for France's Under-21s, he believes time is running out.

Meanwhile, Spain are looking for long-term successors for Gerard Pique - with the nation struggling for top-class centre-backs in recent years.

The likes of Nacho and Cesar Azpilicueta have been roped into the squad to fill a hole recently, with Inigo Martinez and Marc Bartra other options on the periphery.

But with Spain out of the World Cup - losing to hosts Russia on penalties - they are now looking to the future.

Mundo Deportivo claim ex-Spain boss Julen Lopetegui was planning on convincing Laporte he had a future with the Spain team.

But he was sacked after taking over from Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, with Fernando Hierro in charge of Spain for the World Cup.

Prior to his move to City in January, Laporte spent his entire career - from 2010 to 2018 - in Bilbao and qualifies for Spanish residency.
