Manchester United defender Luke Shaw vows to win back Jose Mourinho’s trust and a starting spot

Mourinho has been openly critical of the left-back during his two years in charge at United

LUKE SHAW says he is determined to win back Jose Mourinho’s trust and make a success of his Manchester United career.

Shaw has been out of favour under Mourinho’s charge with the manager openly critical of him at times, not least when he hooked him at half time in the FA Cup win over Brighton last season.

But after returning to training early, Shaw is now determined to use the five-game pre-season tour of the States to work his way into the manager’s plans for the new Premier League campaign.

Shaw, 23, said: “The next five games are about fitness. I want to prove to the manager that I can be in his team.

"When everyone comes back, I still want to be the first name on the teamsheet. It’s time for me to show him I can be in the team.”

Shaw moved to United from Southampton in a £30million switch back in the summer of 2014 and is now entering the final 12 months of his contract.

He claims he has never redisovered the form he showed under Louis van Gaal before his horror leg break back in September 2015 during a Champions League game away to PSV Eindhoven.

That is something he aims to do now.

He said: “It’s been disappointing. I look back over the last few years and I’ve not had a massive run in the team.”

“The year I broke my leg I felt strong - it was unfortunate. I know what I can do and that’s why I am still here.

“I don’t think I would still be involved if the manager didn’t believe in me.”

United's tour starts with a game against Club America in Phoenix tonight, kick off 3am English time Friday morning.
