MANCHESTER UNITED'S Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will sharpen his defensive skills in League One next season after joining Scunthorpe on loan.

Manager Jose Mourinho has allowed the 21-year-old to leave Old Trafford for the upcoming campaign, with the Iron his destination.

Effective at left-back or in central defence, Borthwick-Jackson has had previous loan spells at both Wolves and Leeds United during the last two seasons.

He said: “I’m buzzing to be here and can’t wait to get started. Scunthorpe really wanted me to come here and I couldn’t really turn it down.

“I’ve been at Manchester United since I was six years old and I’ve progressed all the way through. I managed to get my opportunity in the first team in the 2015/16 season, that was a great season for me and kick-started my career.

“But I need to play regular games and I’m at the age where I should be playing regular first-team football.

“I know it’ll be more a lot more physical in League One, so I’ll have to see how I adapt to that and hopefully I can impress.”

Borthwick-Jackson rose to prominence in the 2015-2016 season when he made 14 appearances under former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal.

He has struggled to make an impact under Mourinho though and is well down the pecking order at the club.

With Scunthorpe losing defender Conor Townsend to West Brom, Borthwick-Jackson will fill the gap left behind for the League One side.

Odds on Harry Kane to Manchester United slashed in rapid time

Scunthorpe boss Nick Daws said: “I’m really pleased. He fits the type of full-back that we want - somebody that wants to get forward, wants to get crosses into the box and take opposition full-backs on.

“He’s young, dynamic and talented. He will suit our style of play down to the ground. He’s a boy of stature and will give us a threat in the opposition box and will help us in our own box as well.”
