NOT that anyone doubted Manchester City’s strength this season.

Yet Pep Guardiola’s side underlined the fact they will take some budging this season while Chelsea proved they are certainly a work in progress.

Sergio Augero scored twice but the gap between these two teams on a sweltering day at Wembley – in front of an impressive near-73,000 gate - was bigger than the scoreline suggests.

Aguero could have had at least four goals but at the other end Alvaro Morata continued his barren spell and his confidence still looks to be in pieces.

Maurizio Sarri has been brought in to make Chelsea more exciting and that will be the case but at both ends of the pitch.

Chelsea look capable of conceding lots of goals this season while City will once again score loads.

One of the stars of the game was Phil Foden who showed what a fantastic talent he is. Hopefully, he will be given more games by Guardiola this season.

Midfielder Foden did not take long to make his mark as he saw plenty of the ball and looked a constant danger.

Chelsea then regretted the fact that they gave him too much space and he took full advantage before laying the ball off to Aguero.

He took one touch to get the ball away from Antonio Rudiger and fired an effort through the German’s legs and past Willy Caballero.

Foden continued to cause problems with some silky football while fellow England younger Callum Hudson-Odoi was also threat. He gave Kyle Walker the runaround but fired straight at Claudio Bravo.

Yet City’s biggest scare came when Claudio Bravo’s made a pig’s ear of a long punt from Marcos Alonso and the ball bounced over him before he eventually gathered it.

Augero should have made it 2-0 but he failed to round Caballero but he got his second just before the hour.

It was a brilliant move started by John Stones and Bernardo Silva’s pass left David Luiz stranded and Aguero fired the ball into the corner.

Aguero forced a decent save from Caballero and the Argentine international was then given a standing ovation when replaced by Vincent Kompany near the end.

City sub Brahim Diaz also could have scored a couple and Chelsea were lucky to avoid a pasting.
