Sagna, 35, is signed up until the end of the current season and has the option to stay on for 2019 if he can make an instant Impact.
Head coach Garde said: "I'm very happy about Bacary's arrival.
“He's a player with a great career who's still very motivated to come and help the Impact defy its end of season challenge.
"His personality, experience, and overall game will be a plus for our team.”
Montreal are currently sitting fifth in the MLS' Eastern Conference, with the top six advancing to the play-offs.
And technical director Adam Braz added: “We are very happy to welcome Bacary to the club.
Sagna played 10 seasons of Premier League football after arriving at Arsenal in 2007.
He won the FA Cup before joining the exodus to Manchester City in 2014, where he won the league before leaving in 2017.
The 65-cap international had a brief spell at Benevento in Italy and will now try to make a go of things across the Atlantic.
