OUSMANE DEMEBLE snatched the Spanish Super Cup from Sevilla with a howitzer of a late winner.

Last season’s Copa del Rey winners grabbed a shock lead on nine minutes but Gerard Pique levelled in the second half and Dembele rifled a long-range piledriver into the top corner.

There was still room for late drama when Barca keeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen conceded and saved a late penalty to secure the silverware

Sevilla snatched the lead thanks to a sweeping counter attack and VAR’s debut in Spanish football.

Luis Muriol broke through the Catalan midfield and sucked the defence out of position until he could offload to Pablo Sarabia.

The 26-year-old finished but, before the home side could celebrate, the video assistant referee was called up to decide on an offside call.

After an anxious wait the strike was deemed legal and Sevilla found themselves with a surprise lead.

On 17 minutes Messi almost created the equalised when he slalomed through the Sevilla defence and teed up Jordi Alba down left but his first-time shot across goal was well saved.

The Argentinean master was at his creative best and he fed Luis Suarez in inch-perfect pass that the former Liverpool man snatched at.

And the Uruguayan suffered an even more embarrassing miss moments later from a perfect Messi free-kick.

The cross evaded all the Sevilla defence and the out-rushing goalkeeper before landing on the head of Suarez but he blew his chance as the ball ballooned over the bar.

But Messi’s selfless work paid off three minutes before the half-time break.

A devilishly whipped free-kick looked to be arcing into the bottom corner but it hit the base of the post and spun across the goal.

But Pique reacted quickest to jab home the leveller.

Dembele had a good chance to give Barca the lead on 63 minutes when he found himself with time and space and a clear view on goal but Sevilla keeper Tomas Vaclik beat the ball away.

Aleix Vidal was rounding the keeper and preparing to tap into an empty net before Ter Stegen barged him over in the final moments.

Ben Yedder grabbed the ball but tapped a pea-roller penalty into Stegan’s hands meaning the yellow card he earned for the foul was well worth it.
