Do yellow and red cards count across all competitions, when do players receive a ban in Carabao Cup, Premier League or FA Cup, and when are yellows wiped?

THE season is underway and the third round of the Carabao Cup is set to start this week meaning the big boys are involved.

There have been a number of changes over the last couple of years including extra time being removed from the Carabao Cup and managers can now receive cards from referees.

Do yellow and red cards affect players across all competitions?

New rules have been brought in this season which mean changes across many areas including the yellow and red card system.

In the past, yellow cards picked up in the Premier League, football leagues, FA Cup or Carabao Cup would be added up together.

This meant that five yellow cards across all competitions would result in a player missing one match - in whichever competition they should have been playing in next.

However, the changes this season will see yellow cards only counting in the competition they are received.

Red cards will continue to count across all competitions.

Jose Holebas was shown a straight red for Watford against West Ham in the final match of last season - and was suspended for the FA Cup final.

How many yellow cards do players get to get a ban and when are they wiped?

The new rules mean that how many cards players have to receive before they get a ban changes depending on the tournament.

In the Premier League:

  • Five yellow cards before December 26 = one-match ban
  • 10 yellow cards before March 30 = two-match ban
  • 15 yellows in the season = three-match ban

In the FA Cup and Carabao Cup:

  • Two yellow cards = one match ban
  • Cards will be wiped at the quarter-finals
  • No player can miss the final through yellow cards

What are the other new rules?

  • Manager behaviour - Managers will be penalised if they have to be consistently warned by referees (however they will not receive yellow/red cards like in the EFL). Four warnings from the referee will see a manager receive a one-match ban, eight warnings = two-match bans, etc up to 16 in which managers would receive an FA misconduct ban.
  • Technology in the technical area - Coaching staff are now allowed to use technology in the technical area to show tactic videos and analyse data but it cannot  be used to argue about decisions
  • Suspensions - Cautions are now specific to the competition but red cards apply across all competitions
  • No extra-time in League Cup - Matches which finish in a draw after 90 minutes will go straight to a penalty shoot out.
