Reports of the issue started over the weekend with Sanchez not on the team’s plane ride down to the South Coast, before Mourinho confirmed matters prior to kick-off.

after the Brighton game, he said: “I don’t know really. Let’s wait for the results of the studies, but I don’t think it’s a big thing. I think it will be one or two weeks maximum.”

Anthony Martial was the one to benefit from Sanchez's injury with a place in the starting line up, but he failed to fire and was hauled off on the hour mark.

Before the game, Mourinho said:  “Alexis was going to play but he had a little problem, so we had to decide to give an opportunity to another attacking player."

With a number of players disappointing against the Seagulls and Paul Pogba laying into the team’s attitude post-match, United fans will be hoping for good news this week.

Their next match is at home to Tottenham next Monday night although Mourinho was unable to confirm whether Sanchez would be fit.

If the former Arsenal striker misses the Spurs match, he could return for the away trip to Burnley on September 2.

After that comes a break in Premier League fixtures for the international break.
