And it would have been smiles all around for the John clan as Watford went on to win 2-1, marking their best start to a season in 30 years.

The star was spotted in a directors' box at Vicarage Road alongside his two kids Elijah and seven-year-old Zachary - who plays for Watford's youth team.

The Rocket Man and Candle in the Wind singer was spotted wearing a dotted navy blazer and cream chinos.

As the full-time whistle blasted, he stood up cheering with fists clenched above his head.

Zachary, who is "incredibly into soccer", according to Elton John's husband David Furnish, was seen punching the air in celebration at full-time.

Elton John has been a Watford fan since childhood, having grown up down the road in Pinner, and has had two spells as Chairman of the club, from 1976 to 1987 and 1997 to 2002.

He is now an Honorary Life President of Watford and in 2014 one of the stands at Vicarage Road was named after him.

Watford now sit third in the Premier League, having won their opening four games for just the second time since 1988-89 - and the first time in the Premier League era.

It was also the Hornets' first league win over Spurs since May 1987.

Watford had fallen behind after Abdoulaye Doucoure scored an own goal, before Deeney's equaliser.

Craig Cathcart then scored a header to give the home side all three points.

Deeney later said: "Four wins out of four is a huge achievement for a club of our size.

"We're not naive to think we're going to go on and win the league, we've got a lot to work on but we have an added boost and confidence from this result."
