United chiefs insist they were never going to sell but Barca - and Gerard Pique in particular - have been plotting a move for the unsettled playmaker.

Suarez, 31, told RAC1: "Pogba's an elite player who's won everything.

"He has a lot of quality. I think he would like to be competing for more than he is at the moment.

"He's not a player that belongs to Barca, but he would always be welcome."

Pogba came under fire from Graeme Souness after missing a penalty in the 2-0 win over Burnley.

The Sky Sports pundit said: "They have a very good group at United and they have had a difficult start.

"These problems have been self-inflicted. When everyone is pulling in the same direction they can win, when they're not it is bloody difficult.

"Pogba, saying what he did after being handed the captaincy – he has been offered an olive branch and has not picked it up."

The clouds of doom over Old Trafford looked to have lifted in the past week - especially with Jose Mourinho saying it would cost too much for the club to sack him.

And the Special One was all smiles again today at a top managers' summit which included old foe Arsene Wenger, despite accepting a suspended prison sentence after being accused of £3m tax fraud.
