Lionel Messi will miss his nation's first two friendlies since their chaotic World Cup in the summer.

The squad are now ready to turn the page and rebuild with a fresh squad and that could mean the five-time Ballon d'Or winner might be left behind.

Why is Lionel Messi not playing for Argentina?

After Argentina's World Cup elimination at the hands of eventual winners France, Messi's international career seems to be coming to a disappointing close.

He's now 31 years old with the World Cup not returning for another four years, and so it appears he'll focus more on his glittering club career at Barcelona.

Messi has announced that he will not play for his country again in 2018.

Has Lionel Messi retired?

Messi hasn't retired just yet, although he did in 2016 after Argentina were beaten by Chile in the Copa America final.

The reason was thought to be due to poor organisation surrounding the national team, but since he's returned not much has changed.

The Albiceleste captain has yet to announce whether or not he will wear the national shirt again.

What has the manager said?

Speaking in a news conference three weeks ago, Lionel Scaloni said: ";I spoke to him and after that talk, he has not been called up for these games. Honestly, we have not spoken about what will happen in the future.

"We all know what he represents for us, and we shall see what happens. I have a good relationship with him, it was a good chat that we had and we were very clear.

"He will not be in this call-up, and in the future, we shall see, " he added.

When do Argentina play next?

Argentina play Guatemala and kick off is scheduled for 4am BST.

It takes place at the 93,600-capacity Los Angeles Coliseum, California.

The friendly is not available to watch on TV in the UK.
