Thierry Henry was set to take the top job at Villa Park, only to be swayed by the lure of Ligue 1 giants Monaco.

But JT, 37, could still return to his old club - with ex-Manchester United No2 Rui Faria previously tipped to take on the leading role.

And Terry was philosophical as he pondered his options moving forward, having announced his retirement from football earlier this week.

Speaking at the Pro-Am event at the British Masters, Terry said: “I’m ready for the next step, the next challenge whatever that may be.”

Faria, 43, stepped down from his position at United in May to spend more time with his family after 17 years working with Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach still emerged as the front-runner for the Aston Villa boss' job - but Faria dealt the club a huge blow in claiming he is happy in his break from football.

However, Terry is still in line for some sort of role at the Midlanders, with Harry Redknapp believing the ex-England star would be great for the club.

Redknapp said: "I was at a function last night and John Terry was there and I had a feeling he was right in the frame for the Villa job.

"He's a runner, that's for sure."
