And Marca, one of Spain's leading newspapers, slammed the way in which Luis Enrique's team played.

Their front page showed a despondent David de Gea and Sergio Ramos with the ball in the back of the net.

The headline read: "They caught us whistling."

This may have had a double meaning as some quarters of the Spanish crowd have whistled during the national anthem as they call for Catalan independence.

AS, one of the other leading sports papers, focused on referee Szymon Marciniak's decision not to award Spain a penalty.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was in fine form as he set up two of England's goals with his accurate kicking.

But he was then fortunate to survive a penalty appeal when he pulled down Rodrigo after being caught in possession.

AS's front page screamed "Penalti" - which requires no translation - but also acknowledged the impact of Harry Kane in Spain.

Elsewhere, Sport went with the headline "Magia Rota" which translates to "Broken Magic" as Spain lost a first competitive fixture at home for 15 years.
