Spanish newspapers react furiously to shock England loss with Spain stars slammed and penalty appeals still being made
Marca ran with the image of a despondent David de Gea and Sergio Ramos, with the headline: 'They caught us whistling'
SPANISH newspapers have reacted furiously to the attitude of their players and the refereeing after England's shock Nations League win last night.
Gareth Southgate's men took a 3-0 lead over Spain within 38 minutes in Seville and held on for a 3-2 victory to go second in Group D.
And Marca, one of Spain's leading newspapers, slammed the way in which Luis Enrique's team played.
Their front page showed a despondent David de Gea and Sergio Ramos with the ball in the back of the net.
The headline read: "They caught us whistling."
This may have had a double meaning as some quarters of the Spanish crowd have whistled during the national anthem as they call for Catalan independence.
AS, one of the other leading sports papers, focused on referee Szymon Marciniak's decision not to award Spain a penalty.
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was in fine form as he set up two of England's goals with his accurate kicking.
But he was then fortunate to survive a penalty appeal when he pulled down Rodrigo after being caught in possession.
