CRISTIANO RONALDO made history as he became the first player ever to score 400 goals in Europe's top five leagues - but he could not stop Juventus' perfect start to the season ending.

The Portugal superstar, 33, scored 84 in the Premier League for Manchester United, 311 in La Liga for Real Madrid and now has five in Serie A for Juventus.

Lionel Messi is currently second on the list with 389 goals - all for Barcelona.

Ronaldo reached the tally with a sweet nutmeg goal in the 18th minute of the clash against Genoa.

He could have had more quite easily in the Serie A fixture.

He had eight shots in the opening 35 minutes, with one 25-yard effort being deflected into the side-netting.

Ronaldo's streak started in 2003 when he signed for Manchester United.

He has made 497 appearances, averaging 0.8 goals per game.

Messi, who first featured for the Barcelona senior side in 2004, is averaging 0.91 goals after scoring 389 in 426 appearances.

Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves is third on the list with 366 goals in his 529 appearances from 1957-71 - a rate of 0.69 per game.

Derby's Steve Bloomer is fifth with 317 in 599 appearances and Everton's Dixie Dean sixth with 310 goals in 362 appearances from 1924-38.

Ronaldo's goal was not enough to stop Juve dropping their first points of the season, however.

Brazilian midfielder Daniel Bessa netted in the 67th minute to cancel out Ronaldo's record-breaking strike.
