REAL MADRID have sacked Julen Lopetegui a day after their 5-1 El Clasico humiliation at the hands of Barcelona.

As expected, Castilla coach Santiago Solari will take temporary charge of the first-team after the ex-Spain manager's sacking.

Former Chelsea Antonio Conte had been expected to take over from Lopetegui at Los Blancos, but that appears to have fallen through.

Real Madrid players appeared shocked to have their training session taken by Lopetegui earlier today.

Former Spain chief Lopetegui reportedly said goodbye to his players in the changing room following the painful defeat.

But he was back at Valdebebas today as Los Blancos look to halt their alarming slide into mediocrity.

Yet he lasted just a matter of hours more, as he was given his marching orders.

A Real Madrid statement read: "The board of directors of Real Madrid has agreed to terminate the contract of coach Julen Lopetegui with the club.

"This decision, made at the highest level, aims to change the dynamics of the first team, while all the objectives of this season are still achievable.

"The board of directors understands there is a great disproportion between the quality of the players at Real Madrid - which has eight players nominated for the next Ballon d'Or - something unprecedented in the history of the club, and the results obtained.

"The club thanks Julen Lopetegui and all his technical team for their effort and work and wishes them the best in their professional career.

"He will be provisionally replaced by Santiago Solari, who will lead the first team starting tomorrow, Tuesday."

Yesterday's 5-1 drubbing at the hands of a Luis Suarez-inspired Barcelona proved to be the final straw at Real.

Los Blancos now sit NINTH in La Liga, seven points adrift of league-leading Barca.
