Higuain, 30, was hoping to link up with Ronaldo in Turin, but was sent out on loan at the San Siro to make way for the 33-year-old in the summer.

And after cooling off for a day, the striker has taken to social media to apologise for his antics.

He said to his three million Instagram followers: "I want to apologise to everyone for the behaviour yesterday, my companions at the company (AC Milan) and the fans."

And despite bearing the brunt of the forward’s frustration when he saw red, Ronaldo revealed what he said to the Argentine as he left the pitch.

Ronaldo told Sky Sports Italia: “I told him to calm down, as he risked an even heavier ban.

“He didn't do much, he was irritable at losing the game, that's understandable and I hope he is not punished too severely.”

“I am very happy, especially for the team, because playing away to Milan is always very difficult.

“Winning 2-0 at San Siro is no mean feat. It was important to win because Napoli beat Genoa last night and we had to keep our distance.'

However, Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso was not on board with Ronaldo’s sentiment.

Gattuso blasted: “I do hope Pipita (Higuain) apologises to the referee for his attitude.

“He needs to learn to control himself more.
