UNAI EMERY will reportedly enquire over the possibility of signing Roma ace Cengiz Under in the New Year - putting Henrikh Mkhitaryan's place in the side in doubt.

Arsenal are in desperate need of a winger having shipped off Reiss Nelson on a season-long loan to Hoffenheim, while Danny Welbeck is feared to be out for at least six months.

And with Mkhitaryan flattering to deceive at the Emirates, the Gunners may be forced into making a signing in the January transfer window.

According to , Arsenal have sent scouts to watch Under in action all season at the Stadio Olimpico.

It is believed the North London club will contact the Serie A giants over a potential deal, though Roma are unlikely to sell unless an astronomical offer is made.

Arsenal will have to act fast if they wish to nab the Turkish international, with Manchester City and Tottenham also keeping tabs on the 21-year-old.

A natural right winger, Under - who has registered three goals and five assists in 14 games this campaign - has previously spoken of his desire to play in England.

Speaking in 2017, the ex-Basaksehir star said: "Among the leagues I want to play in are La Liga, the Bundesliga and the Premier League. But I want to play in the Premier League the most.”

SunSport reported last month how Arsenal were keen on his signature, with the player valued at around £44.5million.

Should he make the move to join Emery's men, he would battle for a place in the starting XI with Armenian international Mkhitaryan.

The 29-year-old has struggled for consistency this season - scoring just twice in 14 outings.

He netted a dramatic equaliser against Wolves in the 1-1 draw recently - his first strike since banging in against Chelsea on August 18.

Fans have criticised the performances of the ex-Manchester United man this term.

One supporter said on Twitter: "Mkhitaryan is actually awful man I'm done with this. One of a few players who need to leave."

While another fan commented: "Mkhitaryan has been so so bad this season. High wages but performs like an amateur in every single game. Arsenal really need to sell him asap."

Another stated: "Man we need to get Mkhitaryan off our books ASAP. If he takes any minutes off Nelson next season, I’m rioting."
