Arsenal legend Sol Campbell, ‘one of the greatest minds in football’, confirmed as new Macclesfield boss

The ex-England defender will now embark on taking his first steps into management with League Two's rock-bottom side

SOL CAMPBELL, who describes himself as "one of the greatest minds in football", has been confirmed as the new boss of Macclesfield.

The England legend, 44, has officially taken over at the League Two's rock-bottom side after he travelled to meet with club chiefs at the stadium earlier today.

Campbell further speculated he was heading for crunch talks earlier in the day when he posted an image of him on a train with the caption: "Football moves fast! My work started 2 years ago. #manager #business."

The former Spurs and Arsenal defender has been taking his FA coaching badges and recently worked as coach with the England Under-21 side.

And Macclesfield were clearly more than tempted to offer him a job in a bid to salvage their stay in the Football League.

Their win against Yeovil on Saturday was just their second in 19 league matches and they sit seven points adrift of safety.

Campbell arrives with a wealth of playing experience having made over 600 Premier League appearances and earned 73 caps for the Three Lions.

It is understood that Campbell first held talks with The Silkmen's chairman Mark Blower last Friday.

Last year Campbell admitted how he would be willing "to start in the gutter" and manage a non-league club.

He told the : “People may think that I just want to manage in the Premier League but I’m prepared to go to a non-league club, and if they can’t pay me a salary just pay me a win bonus.

"I’m up for that. I won’t be up for that four or five years down the line but definitely for the first year, as long as it’s a good club with ambition.

"I’m itching to start, I just need a chance, even just an interview in which I can say: ‘Take me for free and I’ll show you what I can do.’"

Sol Campbell seems to forget how old he is as he celebrates 44th birthday in Twitter posts… or is it 43?

Campbell applied for the Oxford job at the start of the year but was turned down.

After that rejection the former Three Lions captain wondered whether his formidable intellect could have deterred them from firing him.

He said: "I'm confident and it's not like it's rocket science to run a football club, especially when you get to that level.

"If you're intelligent enough and a quick learner you will learn pretty soon, within two or three games, what the team needs, training-wise, to survive in that league, get better in that league, to get in the play-offs or even win the league.

"I'm intelligent enough, it's not like I played on a fox and dog pitch all my life. I can't believe some people, I'm one of the greatest minds in football and I'm being wasted because of a lack of experience or "maybe he talks his mind too much."
