Phil Jones scores shocking own goal as Man United slip miss chance to top Champions League group against Valencia
PHIL JONES scored a shocking own goal as Manchester United missed the chance to top their Champions League group.
The England defender, 26, scored a calamitous effort as he poked the ball past an on-rushing Sergio Romero to make it 2-0 to the Spaniards.
From 20 yards out, Jones somehow managed to hoof the ball into his own net having originally done well to marshal Michy Batshuayi away.
With Romero in no man's land, United's players could only watch on as the ball sailed into the net.
It was United's first own goal in the Champions League since Jones himself also scored for Benfica in November 2011.
Carlos Soler had earlier given Valencia the lead after just 17 minutes.
The Spaniard struck a sweet effort across the face of goal, nestling perfectly in the bottom corner to stun United.
Paul Pogba had the chance to equalise shortly after, but missed an absolute sitter - with his blushes only spared by an incorrect decision from the assistant referee.
It took the impact of spark plug Marcus Rashford to give United a sniff, as his powerful header with five minutes to play halved the deficit.
However, the Premier League side couldn't grab and equaliser and missed the chance to top their group, after Juventus slipped to a shock defeat against Young Boys.
