Dempsey is best remembered by United fans for playing a major role in their academy during Sir Alex Ferguson’s final decade at the club.

And he will now be looking to help Solskjaer guide his team back up the Premier League table in a bid to finish in the top four.

Dempsey isn’t the first familiar face to return to Old Trafford, with Fergie’s former assistant Mike Phelan also helping out.

Solskjaer got off to a blistering start in his first game at old side Cardiff, winning 5-1.

And the Norwegian then saw his men win 3-1 against Huddersfield at the Theatre of Dreams on Boxing Day.

Solskjaer will now be looking to make it three wins from three games when United host Bournemouth on Sunday.

And in the meantime, the new gaffer has finally confirmed that Antonio Valencia will remain captain until the end of the campaign.

Solskjaer has also been given a huge fitness boost, with Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku all back in training.
