Chelsea ratings: Willian and Barkley poor, while Christensen and Hudson-Odoi show promise

CHELSEA slipped to a frustrating loss at the hands of Tottenham in the first-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Wembley tonight.

KEPA ARRIZABALAGA

Made one comfortable save before conceding penalty and did not have much else to do in the first half.

Good stop from Kane soon after the break. Decent distribution.

CESAR AZPILICUETA

Unconvincing at times without making any huge mistakes, but not able to offer much going forward in the first half.

Improved in both departments after the break.

ANTONIO RUDIGER

Strong in the challenge but he and Christensen looked vulnerable to the ball over the top early on.

Read the game well to snuff out Tottenham’s limited threat in the second half.

ANDREAS CHRISTENSEN

Escaped punishment for early challenge on Son but was defensively sound after that, bar one moment in the second half.

Made a horrible mess of a great chance to equalise.

MARCOS ALONSO

Like fellow full back Azpilicueta, had some uncomfortable moments but no disasters, and also unable to provide much attacking help in the first half.

Better defensively in the second.

N'GOLO KANTE

The Blues’ most energetic and effective midfielder almost had his reward but hit the post with a first-half volley.

Forced a decent save from Gazzaniga early in the second.

JORGINHO

Better than in the league game but still unable to play high enough up the pitch to give Chelsea first-half attacking momentum.

Improved in the second half without ever taking control.

ROSS BARKLEY

Started brightly and found some good positions in advanced areas but could not find a telling pass or shot.

Not terrible, yet surprising he lasted so long before being replaced by Kovacic.

CALLUM HUDSON-ODOI

Neat and tidy, but strangely reluctant to take on opponents one-on-one. When he did, his deflected cross was tipped on to the post by Gazzaniga.

Neither out of place nor out of this world.

EDEN HAZARD

Often forced to drop deep in search of the ball and not as effective in the final third as Chelsea needed.

More menacing in the second half, kept trying to make things happen but not his night.

WILLIAN

Struggled to find a way into the game in the first half and was little better after the break.

The Brazilian could have no complaints about being replaced by Pedro just after the hour.

SUBS

PEDRO (for Willian, 63mins) - His introduction forced Hudson-Odoi to swap to the left flank and neither had much impact for a while, but the Spaniard became a threat against tiring Spurs legs.

MATEO KOVACIC (for Ross Barkley, 75mins) - A like-for-like replacement made little difference to the way the game was going.

OLIVIER GIROUD (for Callum Hudson-Odoi, 80mins) - The one switch that might have changed the pattern of the game was left very late.
