Why is the Italian Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia?

THIS season's final will be held in Jeddah on Wednesday, January 16 - TONIGHT.

It is not unusual for the game to move around the world and showcase Italian clubs to other countries, with China, Libya, the US and Qatar all among former hosts.

But this is the first time that Saudi Arabia has been chosen, with chiefs announcing that around 50,000 tickets have been sold.

Matteo Salvini, Italy's deputy prime minister, has criticised the decision to play the game in Saudi Arabia with some sections of the stadium reserved for men only.

He said on a Facebook Live broadcast: "That the Italian Super Cup is played in an Islamic country where women can't go to the stadium if they're not accompanied by men is a sadness, a rubbish, I won't watch the game."

And Italian journalist and politician Laura Boldrini tweeted: "Women can go to the stadium only if accompanied by a man. Are you kidding me?"

How can I watch the game?

YOU can catch the showdown live on BT Sport 1.

Coverage begins at 5.30pm, whilst BT Sport subscribers can live stream on their tablet, laptop or mobile by downloading the official app.

Here on SunSport we'll be running a LIVE BLOG from Saudi Arabia to keep you up to date with all the drama as it happens.
