ASTON VILLA'S unlucky star Jordan Lyden is out for the season after a freak injury in training.

Australian midfielder Lyden, 22, was recalled by boss Dean Smith after helping Oldham on loan.

He returned to Villa earlier in the week after helping the Latics beat Premier League Fulham last Sunday.

But Smith could not possibly have expected to lose Lyden in the manner he has.

Lyden damaged a muscle when he simply had a shot at the end of a training session and scans showed he will miss at least three months.

It is a blow to Lyden and Smith as Aston Villa seek a return to the Premier League with a promotion push in the second half of the season.

But it could well spell the end for Lyden's Aston Villa career.

He moved to England to join the academy in 2012 and made his first-team debut four years later.

The Aussie spent the first half of this season on loan at Boundary Park, making 14 appearances and scoring once in a 3-1 victory over Cambridge in November.

Lyden's contract at Villa Park expires this summer and he will do well to convince Smith and Villa chiefs into offering an extension.
