DAVID DE GEA produced a heroic display as Manchester United dealt a blow to Tottenham's title aspirations.

Marcus Rashford scored the winner in a 1-0 success as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed a record-breaking sixth straight win at the start of his reign.

But the Spaniard produced a man-of-the-match display to deliver the win, making 11 saves - the most of any Premier League goalkeeper this season to keep a clean sheet - to leave the North Londoners frustrated.

Mauricio Pochettino's side did have the ball in the net in the first half but Harry Kane's tap-in came from an offside position.

After the break De Gea came to the fore to keep out Dele Alli, Kane and Toby Alderweireld.

The best of the saves came as he denied Kane's low shot late on as United clung on for the impressive win.

De Gea told Sky Sports: "Especially because we won the game against a top team like Tottenham.

"We controlled the first half, they put pressure on us, they had chances and we did well.

"I was feeling very well with the first two saves but it was a great game especially for the three points.

"don’t even remember some of them."

Spurs failed to muster a shot on target during the opening 45 minutes but more than made up for that lacklustre display after half-time.

England captain Kane had the first genuine chance, shooting straight at De Gea who saved with his right foot.

The former Atletico Madrid stopper showed his athleticism to get down to stop Alli's header back across goal before Kane's weak header and Christian Eriksen's optimistic effort from range were cleared up by De Gea.

He then kept out another Alli effort after the ex-MK Dons man stormed into the area.

De Gea's reactions were on show when he saved Alderweireld's stabbed shot from four yards out before producing a save for the cameras via Kane's free-kick.

Alli should have done better when his weak shot was turned away by the 28-year-old before the stand-out save of the afternoon as Kane was again denied by De Gea's right boot.

Gary Neville was among the first to react to the performance, saying on Sky Sports: "De Gea's been inspired. He's brilliant with his feet, closing the angle off and kicking it away.

"He'll have to frame those boots at the end of the game!"
