MARC-ER LAID DOWN

PSG boss admits injury to star is ‘worst thing that could happen to us’

Marco Verratti had to be replaced after just 19 minutes of the 9-0 thrashing of Guingamp

MANCHESTER UNITED have been given a boost after one of PSG's stars was "seriously injured" at the weekend.

The two clubs meet in the Champions League in less than four weeks time - but the French giants could be without influential midfielder Marco Verratti.

After just 19 minutes of PSG's thumping 9-0 win against Guingamp, Verratti had to come off injured, replaced by Julian Draxler.

And it is feared the 26-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell out with an ankle injury.

Speaking after the game, the Frech champs' boss Thomas Tuchel said: "He's seriously injured.

"It's the worst thing that could have happened to us."

PSG released an official statement on their website on Sunday that read: "Marco Verratti's MRI scan conducted after the match against Guingamp confirmed a twisted left ankle without any further damage.

"The evolution of the injury over the coming days with treatment and further examinations will allow the club to establish how long the player will need to fully recover."

Neymar stuns rivals, team-mates and fans alike with incredible pass with his back

The loss of Verratti didn't put PSG off their stride, as they walloped bottom-of-the-league Guingamp.

Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe scored hat tricks in the embarrassing rout.

Neymar netted twice while Thomas Meunier was also on target as PSG avenged Guingamp's League Cup quarter-final win earlier this month.

The rout equaled PSG's record league win: 9-0 away to Troyes in 2016, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the star. The capital club won a French Cup game 10-0 in 1994.

PSG, who have a huge tally of 62 goals in 19 games, are now 13 points ahead of second-place Lille with two matches in hand.
