Barcelona on verge of beating Man City and PSG to £75m transfer for Ajax star Frenkie de Jong
Dutch playmaker is close to making move to Nou Camp with Barca officials in Amsterdam to finalise deal
BARCELONA are reportedly on the verge of completing a £75million deal for Ajax star Frenkie de Jong.
Mundo Deportivo claims Catalan chiefs are currently in Amsterdam as they look to conclude one of football’s biggest transfer battles.
De Jong had been strongly linked with Premier League champions Manchester City.
While Paris Saint-Germain were understood to be keen.
But neither side has been able to match Barcelona’s sheer spending power, with the Spaniards happy to pay the huge fee for De Jong’s signature.
The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the finest young players in Europe in the last 18 months.
And De Jong’s ability to play central midfield, defensive midfield and centre-back makes him stand out from the crowd even more.
Barcelona have an ageing squad, with the likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal all in their 30s.
And De Jong is sure to become a first-team regular within a year or two.
It means PSG and Man City must now look elsewhere, with the French side reportedly keen on Everton’s Idrissa Gueye and City eyeing Wolves’ Ruben Neves.
